How the Mount Cook Scenic Day Tour Works

Four steps from a Queenstown pickup to free time at the mountain and back.

  1. Book, and add a flight if you want one

Book on GetYourGuide from $157 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If you add a scenic flight or glacier hike, give every guest's name and weight so the flight can be confirmed.

  2. Kawarau Gorge to Omarama

Pickup is from one of 28 points around Queenstown. The minibus runs through the Kawarau Gorge and along Lake Dunstan, stops for photos at the Lindis Pass and for 30 minutes in Omarama, where you can buy lunch.

  3. Free time in the park

After a photo stop at Lake Pūkaki you get 2.5 to 3 hours in the national park. Walk the Hooker Valley Track at a steady pace, take a shorter walk, or fly. Walks are self-guided.

  4. Salmon farm and orchard

The drive back stops at High Country Salmon for about 15 minutes and Jacksons Orchard for about 10, then drops you in Queenstown. Booster seats are provided for children aged 7 and under.

The Best Mount Cook Day Tours by Starting Point

Queenstown, Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Wānaka and fly-in days, by time at the mountain.

Yes, you can do Mount Cook in a day, and for most visitors the day tour to book is Cheeky Kiwi’s Mount Cook Small Group Scenic Day Tour from Queenstown, from $157 per person and rated 4.8 from 219 reviews. It gives you 2.5 to 3 hours in the national park, enough for the Hooker Valley Track at a steady pace, and you can add a scenic flight when you book. If you are staying in Lake Tekapo, the Tekapo Shuttle day tour gives you the most time at the mountain of any day tour here, from $97.

How much time each starting point gives you

How long you get at the mountain depends on where you sleep the night before. The further away you start, the more of the day goes to the road.

Lake Tekapo: the most time at the mountain

Tekapo Shuttle, rated 4.8 from 423 reviews, is the day tour to book if you can reach Lake Tekapo. It leaves the Four Square car park at 8am from September to May (8:30am in winter), stops at Peter’s Lookout over Lake Pūkaki and reaches the Hermitage around 10am. The first walk, at 10:15am, is the Tasman Glacier View Track or the gentler Tasman River Track. At 11:30am you start the Hooker Valley Track, with a free shuttle from the Hooker car park back to the village every 30 minutes between 1pm and 2:30pm. The bus leaves the Hermitage at 3pm and is back in Tekapo between 4:30 and 5pm.

That is about three hours on the Hooker Valley, which matches DOC’s walking time, plus the glacier viewpoint, for $97. The trade-offs: it is a shuttle with up to 60 passengers, the walks are self-guided, and you bring your own lunch. Walking poles and snow spikes are handed out when the tracks need them. Our Tekapo Shuttle breakdown has the full timetable, and our Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo guide covers the lake itself.

Cheeky Kea also runs a small-group day tour from Tekapo, from $157 with a 10am pickup and a bakery lunch, but it allows 2 to 2.5 hours in the park and is rated 4.3 from 56 reviews.

Queenstown: the balanced choice

The Queenstown tours give you about three hours at the mountain after a drive of just over three hours each way. The scenic tour leaves the park time open. Cheeky Kiwi’s Mt Cook & Hooker Valley Day Tour, also $157, spends its whole stop on the walk. Altitude Tours’ full-day small group tour on Viator gives about 3.5 hours. You can also fly in for the day, with about five hours on the ground. Our Queenstown tours page compares all of these, along with the one-way and heli-hike options.

Christchurch: Lake Tekapo on the way, less time at the mountain

The Christchurch tours spend about eight hours driving and give you 1.5 to 2.5 hours in the park, depending on the operator. NZSI’s Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo Day Tour, from $134 and the most-reviewed day tour we list, at 4.8 from 639 reviews, allows about 1.5 hours at the Tasman Glacier. What you gain is Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd on the way. Our Christchurch tours page sets out every option from there, including the one-way tour to Queenstown.

Wānaka and Twizel

Cheeky Kea’s Mt Cook Day Tour From Wānaka is new, from $71 with no reviews yet. It travels via the Lindis Pass and Ōmārama’s Clay Cliffs, stops at Twizel and Lake Pūkaki, and includes lunch, water and snacks. The listing does not say how long you get in the park, so ask before you book if the Hooker Valley is your goal.

Twizel is only about 50 minutes’ drive from the Hooker Valley car park, and none of the tours we list runs a return day tour from there, so driving yourself is the simple option. Cheeky Kea’s one-way Mt Cook to Twizel tour ($71) is the only tour we list that ends in Twizel.

Which walk fits your free time

Every day tour gives you self-guided time, so the walk you choose depends on how long you have. Times are DOC’s.

The Hooker Valley Track is fully open. The new 189 m suspension bridge, the longest in New Zealand, opened on 28 July 2026, so older pages that say the track stops at the Mount Sefton lookout are out of date.

Cloud, winter and staying the night

NZSI, Cheeky Kea and Cheeky Kiwi say their tours run in all weather, so check the forecast. Mount Cook Village gets rain on about 171 days a year, so the peak can be in cloud on your day. GetYourGuide bookings can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, which lets you move to a clearer day if your plans allow. In winter, snow can close State Highway 80, shaded parts of the Hooker Valley ice over, and DOC recommends microspikes and poles.

A day tour gets you to the mountain, but staying the night gives you more. DOC warns that the Hooker Valley car park can fill between 10am and 4pm from November to March, so an overnight stay lets you walk before or after the crowds. It also gives you time for the Tasman Lake boat trip. Glacier Explorers is sold on neither marketplace: you book it direct with the Hermitage by phone or email. The trip takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, with around an hour on the lake among the icebergs (which are not guaranteed). The operator’s own NZD rate is NZ$219 per adult from 1 October 2026, and it closes from mid-June to the end of August. It will not fit into a 2.5-hour stop. For more on the lake, see our Tasman Glacier tours guide.

The park is also inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, but none of the day tours here includes stargazing. For stars, look at the 2-day tour on our Christchurch page. When you have picked a date, check availability for the Queenstown scenic day tour.
