Helicopter Proposals and Special Occasions at Mount Cook
Plan a helicopter proposal, elopement or anniversary on a Mount Cook glacier: private vs shared flights, 2026–27 prices, permits, weather backups and tips.
To propose, elope or celebrate on the snow at Aoraki/Mount Cook, book a private landing instead of a shared seat. INFLITE (Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters) sells an exclusive 90-minute Picnic Amongst the Peaks on the Tasman Glacier for NZ$4,999 (up to 6 people) and wedding landings from NZ$4,499. Air Safaris at Lake Tekapo sells a private engagement flight for NZ$1,995, which is the lowest price we found for a private alpine proposal in the region. If a shared flight fits the budget, INFLITE’s 25-minute scenic helicopter flight with an alpine landing (US$217, 4.7/5 from 519 reviews) is the most-reviewed way to stand on the snow together. A wedding also needs a NZ marriage licence (NZ$158 since 18 June 2026) and operators who hold DOC concessions.
Prices checked on the operators’ own pages in October 2026. All prices are NZ$ per flight or per adult as stated, bought direct from the operator; GetYourGuide and Viator prices are shown in US$ and change with exchange rates. Most New Zealand operators reset their prices on 1 October, and the new prices usually run to 30 September 2027.

Who offers private and special-occasion flights at Mount Cook and in the Mackenzie?
INFLITE / Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters (Aoraki/Mount Cook Airport)
INFLITE is the only operator flying ski plane glacier landings at Mount Cook, and it has the widest range of private products:
- Exclusive Picnic Amongst the Peaks (helicopter): NZ$4,999, up to 6 passengers, 90 minutes, 7 days a week. INFLITE describes a landing at “our favourite spot directly opposite Aoraki/Mount Cook” where you “enjoy a glass of bubbles” while the pilot sets up a private picnic on the snow. The route crosses the Main Divide for views of the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers before the Tasman Glacier landing.
- Exclusive Picnic Amongst the Peaks (ski plane): also from NZ$4,999. Book by phone (+64 3 430 8026) if you prefer the ski plane.
- Wedding photography packages (exclusive use): Glacier Grandeur (Tasman Glacier, helicopter or ski plane, 30-minute landing) NZ$4,999; Liebig Dome Lovers (helicopter, 30-minute landing) NZ$4,499; extra landing time NZ$350 per 15-minute block.
- Ski The Tasman (July to September): from NZ$6,999 per group of up to 5, a 6-hour ski plane day with lunch, for couples who want a winter celebration on skis.
- Shared options for a lower-key moment: Glacier Highlights costs NZ$699 per adult for 45 minutes with a glacier landing. The ski plane version is on Viator too (Glacier Highlights by ski plane, 4.9/5, though from only 19 reviews).
Other websites quote the private picnic at NZ$3,999, and one blog lists a “private picnic” at NZ$949. INFLITE’s own page shows NZ$4,999, so plan on that. INFLITE’s Franz Josef sister brand has advertised a Tasman picnic departing from Franz Josef “From NZ$3999 NZ$2999”, which looks like a promotional price on a different product.
The Helicopter Line (Glentanner Park): shared flights, private charter on request
The Helicopter Line’s Mount Cook flights leave from Glentanner Park. Its Aoraki/Mount Cook page lists the Alpine Vista at NZ$395 (25 minutes; 4.8/5, but from only 9 GetYourGuide reviews), the Alpine Explorer at NZ$595 (35 minutes; 4.2/5 from 26 Viator reviews), Mountains High at NZ$695 (40 minutes) and Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Glaciers at NZ$925 (55 minutes; 4.8/5 from 45 GetYourGuide reviews). Resellers quote other figures, so confirm the price at checkout.
The company told one Tripadvisor reviewer that “our cabins are designed to accommodate 6 passengers” and “we do offer private charter options.” It publishes no fixed Mount Cook proposal package, so ask for a quote. It does publish a Mount Cook weddings information sheet: the copy we found lists a Liebig Dome wedding flight from NZ$1,820, with landing fees and a DOC ceremony concession fee on top, so ask for the current version. Its published Queenstown–Milford–Franz Josef–Mount Cook private charter costs NZ$19,995 per helicopter for 5 hours, the top of the market.
Air Safaris (Lake Tekapo): the lowest-cost private proposal
Air Safaris’ weddings page lists an Engagement Package at NZ$1,995: 50 minutes in total, up to 30 minutes on the ground at “an exclusive alpine location overlooking Lake Tekapo”, with bubbly. Its wedding photography packages, “Rocky” and “Mt Joseph”, cost NZ$1,995 each for 1 hour 15 minutes including up to 45 minutes on the ground, and Waterfall Hut costs NZ$2,195 for 1 hour 20 minutes. Each package is “exclusively for up to 5 people”, with the helicopter and pilot to yourselves.
The landing is in the Mackenzie high country above Tekapo, not on the Tasman Glacier. It is beautiful, but it is not a Mount Cook glacier landing. Air Safaris’ shared Mount Cook flights include Mount Cook Alpine Grandeur at NZ$695 (45 minutes, snow landing) and Mount Cook Franz & Fox Magic at NZ$975 (60 minutes, with a snow landing on Liebig Dome at 7,700 ft). Its fixed-wing Grand Traverse (no landing; US$300, 4.9/5 from 132 GetYourGuide reviews) covers the most mountain scenery of its flights.
Mackenzie Helicopters (7 km south of Lake Tekapo): luxury and golden-hour flights
Mackenzie Helicopters’ exclusive range includes Alpine Picnic Paradise at NZ$8,865 per charter (1–5 people, 3 hours), a Secluded Alpine Hot Tub at NZ$6,145 per charter (1–4 people, 2.5 hours), an Alpine Heli Hike from NZ$6,945 per charter (up to 5) and the Lavish Coastal Cuisine Adventure at NZ$17,820 per charter (1–4 people, about 7 hours). Its per-person flights include Lake Tekapo to Aoraki/Mt Cook (40 minutes, NZ$680 per person) and Doors-Off Adrenalin Seeker (from NZ$500 per person).
Its Sunrise and Sunset flight lasts 50 minutes and costs from NZ$1,230 per person. Its sunrise page lists a minimum of 2 people and says the flight is “only offered during the winter months May - September”. A reseller, Everything New Zealand, lists a private 50-minute sunrise flight for groups of 2–6 from NZ$1,475, so confirm which price applies. Call Mackenzie Helicopters if golden-hour light matters more to you than landing on the Tasman Glacier itself.
Glentanner, Tekapo Helicopters and others
Glentanner Park is the base for The Helicopter Line and a booking agent for Mount Cook activities, including Glacier Explorers. We could not find current special-occasion packages on Tekapo Helicopters’ own site, so ask them directly before booking.
Mount Cook-based celebrants and planners
- mtcook.com (Charlie Hobbs, celebrant and IFMGA mountain and ski guide): lists a celebrant fee of NZ$650, a photographer at NZ$2,500 + GST (50 photos), witnesses at NZ$100 each and a “DOC permit fee” of NZ$115, with aircraft priced on application. It can add Ski the Tasman, heli-hiking or glacier kayaking. The NZ$115 DOC figure looks out of date next to DOC’s current one-off concession minimums (see the permits section), so treat it as a guide only.
- New Zealand Dream Weddings says it holds a DOC concession for 2025–2035 covering heli-landings and ceremonies at approved sites in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, Wānaka, Queenstown and Lake Tekapo.
- Eloping Weddings sells Mount Cook heli-elopement packages with a registered celebrant, two witnesses, photo and video, and flights to Liebig Dome, Braemar Dome or the Tasman Glacier. Prices are on enquiry.
- Timekeepers (Queenstown photographers) list a helicopter alpine landing add-on “from + NZD 1,765” for their pre-wedding packages and fly from Aoraki/Mount Cook among other bases.
Can you propose on a helicopter flight at Mount Cook?
Yes. Every operator we checked lands on snow and is used to the odd proposal. The main choice is between a shared flight and a private one.
Proposing on a shared scenic flight: pros and cons
Pros: it costs least (two seats on The Helicopter Line’s 40-minute Tasman Glacier landing flight cost NZ$1,390 at NZ$695 each), it is easy to book, and there are usually plenty of departures.
Cons:
- You share the landing with up to four strangers, and you cannot control where they stand or whether they are in your photos.
- The schedule sets the landing time, and it is short.
- Seats are allocated by weight, so you may not sit together.
- If the weather turns, the pilot may switch to a different landing site or a route with no landing.
Making it work: tell the operator when you book (see the checklist). Ask whether they can seat you together and let you off the aircraft last, so you have a minute with the view before the others step out. One Queenstown reviewer of Over The Top described staff marking the booking as a proposal and texting instead of calling, so the partner would not overhear. Good operators do this routinely.
Is buying out every seat cheaper than a private charter?
Sometimes. Six seats on The Helicopter Line’s Mountains High cost 6 × NZ$695 = NZ$4,170 for a 40-minute flight. INFLITE’s NZ$4,999 private picnic gives you 90 minutes, a picnic, bubbles and a landing chosen for privacy. For about NZ$830 more, the private flight adds time, privacy and the picnic. Air Safaris’ NZ$1,995 engagement package costs about the same as three shared Mountains High seats.
What does a private helicopter cost per hour in NZ?
Charter operator HeliMe says New Zealand helicopter charters usually run “anywhere between $2000 per hour and $4000 per hour”, depending on the aircraft and the landing. Flight school Aviation Training lists “AS350 B2 Squirrel $3200+ GST per hour” as a training rate, and warns that “flight training rates are cheaper and may not be reflective of the commercial charter rates for these aircraft”. On the West Coast, Mountain Helicopters (Fox Glacier) lists an “Exclusive 1 hour Private Charter” from NZ$2,500 for 1–4 passengers. You also pay for positioning and standby time: the aircraft’s clock keeps running while you picnic or marry on the snow, which is why a fixed-price package often works out cheaper.
Helicopter or ski plane for a proposal?
Choose a helicopter for flexibility, sheltered landing spots and the Liebig Dome option. Choose a ski plane (INFLITE only) for the heritage romance and the wide, open Tasman névé. INFLITE sells both versions of its picnic at the same NZ$4,999. Our helicopter vs ski plane comparison covers the two aircraft in detail.
How to plan a glacier proposal at Mount Cook: a step-by-step checklist
- Pick your format and budget: shared (about NZ$760–1,850 for two), private Tekapo alpine landing (NZ$1,995) or private Tasman Glacier picnic (NZ$4,999).
- Book direct and write “proposal” in the booking notes. Ask the operator to contact you by text or email only, and agree a code word for the day.
- Leave a two-day weather buffer. Book the first morning of a 2–3 night stay at Mount Cook Village, Twizel or Tekapo, so a cancellation can roll to the next day. INFLITE says weather calls can be made “anytime from early morning up to approximately 10 minutes before departure.”
- Agree the moment with the pilot. Ask where you will land, how long you will have, and whether the pilot can step away or take photos. If the pilot is your photographer, ask when you book.
- Secure the ring. Keep it in a zipped inner pocket and tether the box to your glove or wrist with a thin lanyard. Never open it over loose snow. Fingers shrink in the cold, so a well-fitted ring can be loose up there: slip it on with care, or consider a snug fit or a ring guard.
- Dress for -10°C windchill and glare: a warm layer, a windproof jacket, sunglasses (essential on snow) and boots with grip. Thin liner gloves let you handle the box.
- Keep the surprise. Book under a cover story such as a birthday scenic flight. Operators ask for every passenger’s weight at booking, so find a casual way to learn your partner’s (a luggage-weighing moment works).
- Plan the photos. Either hire a photographer who flies with you (they take a seat, so a private flight suits this best) or brief the pilot. Film on a phone in your pocket, switched to airplane mode so it does not buzz.
- Plan the toast. Private picnic products include bubbles. On shared flights, ask the operator before bringing glass or open alcohol.
- Have a Plan B and a Plan C. Plan B is the next morning’s flight. Plan C is a spot on the ground: the Hooker Valley Track suspension bridges, the Tasman Glacier viewpoint or Lake Pukaki at sunset. Lake Tekapo’s Church of the Good Shepherd is lovely but very crowded.
Can we write “Marry Me” in the snow?
Stamping letters into the snow with your boots does no harm; it melts and blows over. Leave nothing behind: no petals, confetti, dye, balloons, signs staked into the snow or sparklers. The landing zones sit inside a World Heritage national park, operators work under DOC concessions with leave-no-trace conditions, and kea will eat anything shiny. A printed sign that you hold and take home is a photographer’s favourite.
What’s the best time of day and season for light?
Early-morning flights often have calmer air and crisp light, but conditions change day to day, so treat that as a tendency, not a promise. For golden-hour colour, Mackenzie Helicopters flies private sunrise and sunset flights from Tekapo between May and September. The Tasman Glacier has snow all year (INFLITE: “Snow/ice all year round”). From June to August the snowfields are at their whitest and the sun sits lower; from December to February you get longer days and more departures.
Can you get married on a glacier in New Zealand?
Yes. Glacier weddings and elopements are legal in New Zealand. You need the standard marriage paperwork, plus operators who hold DOC concessions for the landing site and the commercial work.
NZ legal requirements (govt.nz, checked 1 October 2026)
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Marriage licence fee | NZ$158 (the Department of Internal Affairs raised it from NZ$150 on 18 June 2026) |
| When to apply | At least 3 working days before the ceremony (online if you are in New Zealand or arrive more than 3 working days before) |
| Validity | The licence expires after 3 months |
| Who marries you | A registered marriage celebrant; celebrants set their own fees |
| Registry ceremony option | A set fee of NZ$175, up from NZ$90, which 1News (21 May 2026) called “a one-off increase” (registry office only, so not a glacier option) |
| Witnesses | Two witnesses (packages usually supply them, e.g. mtcook.com at NZ$100 each) |
| Certificate | Official marriage certificate NZ$35 after registration |
Several wedding blogs still quote NZ$150 for the licence. NZ$240 was never the licence fee: it was the old licence-plus-registry-ceremony total. 1News (21 May 2026) reported the licence rising “from $150 to $158 – putting the baseline cost of getting married at $333, up $93 from $240”. The Department of Internal Affairs’ 21 May 2026 announcement confirms that from 18 June 2026 most births, deaths and marriages fees rise “by approximately 5.6%”, including “marriage and civil union licence fees will increase from $150 to $158”. Registrar-General Russell Burnard noted the fees “have remained unchanged for almost ten years.”
Do I need a permit to elope in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park?
In practice your suppliers need permission, not you. DOC states that anyone using public conservation land to run a business or activity needs a concession, that “aircraft activities on or over public conservation lands and waters must have a concession or authorisation from DOC,” and that commercial filming needs a concession. A DOC message to the events industry says “all events on public conservation land require a concession from DOC” and “all drone use on conservation land requires a permit.” DOC’s fees page lists the current one-off concession minimum at NZ$740–930 + GST. Older DOC pages still show a NZ$130 + GST processing fee, so expect the higher figure for a new application.
What this means for you: book a helicopter operator, celebrant, photographer and planner who already hold DOC concessions for the exact landing site, and ask for the concession number in writing. Do not bring a drone. Leave plenty of lead time: a do-it-yourself one-off application can take weeks and costs more than an operator’s packaged site fee. DOC does not say outright whether a couple with no commercial suppliers needs a concession, so ask DOC permissions (permissions@doc.govt.nz) if that is your plan.
What does a Mount Cook elopement really cost?
| Line item | Typical 2026–27 cost (NZ$) | Source and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive wedding flight with a 30-minute landing | 4,499–4,999 | INFLITE Liebig Dome Lovers / Glacier Grandeur |
| Extra 15 minutes on the snow | 350 per block | INFLITE |
| Celebrant | About 650 | mtcook.com; other celebrants set their own fees |
| Two witnesses | About 200 | mtcook.com, NZ$100 each (or bring friends) |
| Photographer | About 2,500 + GST | mtcook.com (Mary Hobbs, 50 images); alpine specialists vary |
| Marriage licence | 158 | govt.nz |
| Realistic total | About 8,000–12,000 | Before accommodation, styling, hair and make-up or video |
A lower-cost alternative: Air Safaris’ “Rocky” or “Mt Joseph” wedding photography packages (NZ$1,995, up to 5 people, up to 45 minutes on the ground above Lake Tekapo) cut the flight cost by more than half. Check that the operator’s or celebrant’s site permissions cover the ceremony itself.
Seat maths: a photographer, a celebrant and two witnesses plus the couple make 6 people, which fills a 6-seat helicopter. With 5-seat aircraft such as Air Safaris’, ask your celebrant whether the pilot or photographer can act as a witness, or say your vows on the snow and sign the paperwork on the ground.
Honeymoon and anniversary helicopter flights: a 3-day romantic itinerary
- Day 1 (arrive at Mount Cook Village): check in to The Hermitage or a motel in the village such as Aoraki Court Motel, then walk the Hooker Valley Track at golden hour.
- Day 2 (morning): the private Picnic Amongst the Peaks (NZ$4,999) or a shared Mountains High (NZ$695 per person). Afternoon: the Glacier Explorers Tasman Lake boat among the icebergs (NZ$219 per adult from 1 October 2026; it runs from 1 September to mid-June and is closed in July and August, and you must be able to walk 1.5 km to the lake in 25 minutes). Keep the morning of Day 3 free as your weather backup.
- Day 3: drive about 1 hour 15 minutes to Lake Tekapo for an evening at Tekapo Springs: hot pools and stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. BookMe lists it at NZ$179 per adult, with deals from NZ$139, and the hot-pool part runs in all weather.
Indicative total for two (excluding accommodation): NZ$4,999 + NZ$438 + about NZ$358 = about NZ$5,800, or about NZ$2,200 with a shared helicopter flight instead. If you would rather walk on the ice together, see our heli-hiking comparison; the 3-hour Tasman Glacier helicopter ride and hike (US$569, 4.9/5 from 329 reviews) is the Mount Cook heli-hike with the most reviews.
Milestone birthdays, family celebrations and the “helicopter ride for 3”
Helicopter ride for 3 or 4: shared or private?
For three people, shared seats usually cost least (for example 3 × NZ$695 on Air Safaris’ Alpine Grandeur = NZ$2,085). Air Safaris’ Lake Tekapo shared flights need at least 4 passengers to depart, so a small group may be combined with others. A private flight makes sense if you want to sit together, choose the timing, or let Grandma take things at her own pace.
- Children: Air Safaris lists child fares (ages 3–13) and infant fares. INFLITE charges for infants because Civil Aviation rules require a seat to be left free for a lap infant. Glacier Explorers takes no children under 4.
- Weight: Air Safaris sets a maximum weight per person; its flights page and newzealand.com give different figures (130 kg and 120 kg), so confirm when you book. Every operator asks for weights at booking.
Milestone birthday for 5–6
The INFLITE picnic (up to 6) works out at about NZ$833 per head with a full aircraft, a little above a premium shared seat, but the flight is private and includes food.
Accessibility for older couples and limited mobility
Helicopters are the easiest way onto the snow, with no hiking required. You do need to step up into the cabin and walk a few metres on uneven, slippery snow. Tell the operator about mobility aids when you book. On a private flight the pilot can choose a flatter landing spot and give you more time. The Tasman Lake boat does not suit anyone who cannot walk 1.5 km in 25 minutes.
Helicopter gift vouchers and “experience days”: what to know
| Operator | Voucher types | Validity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| INFLITE / Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters | Experience (from NZ$349) or dollar value (from NZ$50) | 3 years from issue | The longest validity we found; good for overseas recipients |
| The Helicopter Line (Mount Cook gift card) | NZ$50–1,000 | 12 months from purchase | Non-refundable and not exchangeable for cash; full credit if the operator cancels for weather or you cancel with 24 hours’ notice. Check the price-validity date on the voucher page |
| Air Safaris | Flight vouchers such as Grand Traverse, Alpine Grandeur and Mackenzie Explorer | 1 year from purchase | Voucher prices have lagged the flight price list after the 1 October price change, so compare both |
For international gift-givers: buy a dollar-value voucher instead of a specific flight, since prices rise each 1 October. Pick the longest validity, and add a printed card naming two possible dates.
Memorial flights and scattering ashes at Aoraki/Mount Cook
This needs care. To Ngāi Tahu, Aoraki “represents the most sacred of ancestors”, and the Crown’s settlement text records that “the meltwaters that flow from Aoraki are sacred”. Aoraki has Tōpuni status, and DOC notes that Ngāi Tahu “believe that it is not appropriate to climb onto what is effectively the head of an ancestor.” We found no DOC or Ngāi Tahu rule that explicitly permits or bans scattering ashes in the national park, and no Mount Cook operator that advertises ash-scattering flights. A 2020 Wilderness Magazine article listed “others depositing ashes on the track” among culturally insensitive acts on the mountain.
Our recommendation:
- Do not scatter ashes on or near Aoraki, on the glaciers, or into waterways fed from it.
- If a family member’s wish was “the mountains”, call the DOC Aoraki/Mount Cook Visitor Centre (03 435 1186) and ask the operator before booking. Consider asking the local Papatipu Rūnanga for guidance.
- Gentler alternatives include a memorial flight of remembrance without scattering (a private landing for a moment of silence), scattering on private high-country land with the owner’s permission, or dividing the ashes and scattering a small portion at an appropriate place.
Comparing Queenstown, Wānaka and Franz Josef (briefly)
| Base | Option | Price (NZ$) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queenstown | Over The Top “Heli Picnic on a Peak” | 3,450 (2) / 3,750 (3) / 3,995 (4), valid to 30 Sep 2027 | A polished proposal service, but on a mountain top, not a Mount Cook glacier |
| Queenstown | Heliworks Remarkables Scenic (which it calls “a wonderful location for weddings or a proposal”) / Paradise Picnic | From 395 per person / from 2,695 per charter | A good short option at a lower price |
| Wānaka | Aspiring Helicopters Mount Cook Scenic Flight (private charter only, up to 5) | On enquiry; prices valid to 30 Sep 2027; 48-hour cancellation | Good if you are based in Wānaka |
| Franz Josef / Fox | INFLITE Franz (Tasman picnic from the West Coast); Mountain Helicopters 1-hour private charter | From 2,999 (promotion) / from 2,500 | West Coast weather is wetter, so add buffer days |
From Queenstown, a fly-in with a Mount Cook landing adds cost and weather exposure. Our glacier helicopter comparison sets Mount Cook against Franz Josef and Fox, our Mount Cook from Queenstown page compares the fly-in and road tours, and our guide to day trips from Queenstown covers the rest of the region.
Weather, cancellation and refund policies for special-occasion bookings
- INFLITE: a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before check-in. If INFLITE cancels for weather, you get an alternative flight path, a new date or a full refund.
- The Helicopter Line: full credit with 24 hours’ notice or if the operator cancels for weather. Cancellations within 24 hours and no-shows are charged in full. Private charters need a 50% deposit online.
- Mackenzie Helicopters (through a reseller): free cancellation up to 48 hours before; a new date or a full refund for weather.
- Aspiring Helicopters: a 48-hour cancellation policy.
Rule of thumb: for proposals and elopements, book the flight for the first full day of a 2–3 night stay. Never schedule it on the day you fly out of New Zealand, and buy travel insurance that covers non-refundable suppliers such as photographers and celebrants, who often keep their deposits.

FAQ
How much does a helicopter proposal cost in NZ? A shared Mount Cook snow-landing flight for two costs about NZ$790–1,850 with The Helicopter Line (NZ$395–925 per person). Private proposals start at NZ$1,995 with Air Safaris at Tekapo, and INFLITE’s private Tasman Glacier picnic costs NZ$4,999.
Can I propose on a glacier at Mount Cook? Yes. Helicopter and ski plane flights land on the Tasman Glacier all year. For privacy, book a private product and tell the operator it is a proposal.
Can you get married on a glacier in New Zealand? Yes. You need a NZ$158 marriage licence (apply at least 3 working days ahead), a registered celebrant and two witnesses. INFLITE sells glacier wedding landings from NZ$4,499.
Do I need a permit to elope in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park? Your commercial suppliers (aircraft, photographer, planner) must hold DOC concessions, and drones need a DOC permit. Booking operators who already hold concessions is the practical route, since DOC’s one-off concessions start at NZ$740 + GST.
Can we bring champagne? Private picnic flights include bubbles, served by the operator. On shared flights, ask first, and never leave glass or corks on the snow.
What if the weather cancels our proposal flight? Operators refund or rebook weather cancellations (INFLITE offers another route, a new date or a full refund). Keep a spare morning in your itinerary.
Is a private flight worth it compared with a shared one? For a proposal or wedding, usually yes. Buying out six shared seats (about NZ$4,170) costs nearly as much as INFLITE’s NZ$4,999 private picnic, which runs longer and lands somewhere quiet.
Can we scatter ashes from a helicopter at Mount Cook? No Mount Cook operator advertises it, and Aoraki is a sacred ancestor to Ngāi Tahu. Talk to DOC and the operator first, and consider a memorial flight without scattering.
Do operators sell gift vouchers? Yes. INFLITE vouchers are valid for 3 years, The Helicopter Line’s for 12 months and Air Safaris’ for 1 year.
What’s the best helicopter experience for two at Mount Cook? INFLITE’s Picnic Amongst the Peaks is the best choice for a once-in-a-lifetime date. A shared Mountains High or Glacier Highlights flight works if you are watching the budget.
Can children or grandparents come? Yes. Child and infant fares apply, weights are required at booking, and lap infants still take a seat with INFLITE. Tell the operator about mobility needs.
When should I book? Book private products weeks ahead from December to March. Schedule the flight early in your stay so there is room to rebook.
Notes on these prices
- INFLITE’s picnic (NZ$4,999) and wedding packages (NZ$4,999 / NZ$4,499) show no validity date on its pages, so reconfirm them when you book.
- Mackenzie Helicopters’ prices come from its own exclusive-flights and Mount Cook pages (October 2026); the sunrise and sunset price varies between its own page and resellers.
- Air Safaris’ engagement and wedding prices come from its weddings page; older listings quote lower figures and packages for three people.
- DOC’s pages disagree on concession fees (NZ$130 + GST on an older page, NZ$740–930 + GST on the current fees page), and mtcook.com’s NZ$115 “DOC permit fee” is likely out of date.
- We found no DOC rule that specifically bans a toast at a landing site. Operators supply bubbles on private products; confirm anything you bring yourself.
- We could not confirm Tekapo Helicopters’ special-occasion offers, The Hermitage’s Big Sky stargazing price for 2026–27, or proposal packages from Glacier Southern Lakes and Wanaka Helicopters.
- Tekapo Springs stargazing prices vary by channel (NZ$179 on BookMe with deals from NZ$139). Book direct to confirm.
- Check whether your home country recognises a New Zealand marriage, and whether you need an apostille, before you travel.
