Tekapo + Mount Cook

Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook on One Tour

The route, the stops in order, and which tour fits your base and your pace.

The best Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo tour from Christchurch is Cheeky Kea’s Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo day tour with lunch, from $157 per person: a group of 11 at most, a bakery lunch included, and about two to two and a half hours in the national park after stops at both lakes. If you are already staying in Tekapo, the Tekapo Shuttle day trip at $97 gives you far longer at Mount Cook, enough to walk the whole Hooker Valley Track.

The route: Lake Tekapo, Lake Pūkaki, Aoraki/Mount Cook

Every combined tour follows the same line through the Mackenzie Basin. From Takapō/Lake Tekapo the road runs west to Lake Pūkaki, then turns north up State Highway 80 along the lake’s western shore to Mount Cook Village, where the highway ends. Tekapo to the village is about 104 km, around an hour and a quarter of driving; allow an hour and a half with stops.

The stops, in order:

  • Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd, where most tours stop for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Lake Pūkaki, whose bright turquoise comes from glacial flour, fine rock ground by the glaciers upstream. Aoraki/Mount Cook stands at the far end of the lake on a clear day.
  • Peter’s Lookout (Tapataia Mahaka), a formal pull-over on SH80 above the Pūkaki shore with a car park, toilets and one of the classic views up the lake to the mountain.
  • Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park: the Hooker Valley Track, the Tasman Glacier View Track and the village.

The lake’s name is dual. The Mackenzie District Council adopted Takapō/Lake Tekapo in 2021, using the Māori name alongside the English one, while the town is still called Lake Tekapo in most official use.

Christchurch day tours that include both

Two Christchurch day tours lead the listings. Both run about 13 hours and stop at both lakes, but they split the day differently.

Cheeky Kea spends less time at the lakes and more at the mountain, and lets you choose between part of the Hooker Valley and the Tasman Glacier walk. Our Cheeky Kea tour breakdown covers the day stop by stop.

NZ South Island Tours’ Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo day tour is the most-reviewed tour in our catalogue and the cheapest of the two. It lingers longer at Tekapo, then allows about 1.5 hours at the Tasman Glacier area for the Blue Lakes and the viewpoint walk. Lunch is included only on bookings from 1 October 2026 at a higher price, and earlier bookings eat at the village cafés. The walks in the park are not guided on either tour. Our NZSI breakdown and the Christchurch tours guide compare the rest of the Christchurch options.

Can you do Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook in one day?

Yes. Every tour on this page does, and the drive between them is only about an hour and a quarter. The catch is where the day starts. From Christchurch, around eight hours of the day are spent driving, so Tekapo becomes a 15- to 30-minute photo stop and Mount Cook gets two hours or so. That is enough for the Tasman Glacier View Track or part of the Hooker Valley, but not the whole Hooker Valley Track, which DOC says needs three to four hours return.

From Tekapo the day is relaxed. The Tekapo Shuttle leaves the Four Square car park at 8:00am from September to May (8:30am in winter), stops at Peter’s Lookout, reaches the Tasman Glacier View Track at about 10:15am and drops you at the Hooker Valley at 11:30am. A free shuttle runs back to the village from 1:00 to 2:30pm, the bus leaves at 3pm and it stops at Lake Pūkaki on the way home, arriving about 4:30 to 5pm. Lunch is not included, so pack one. Cheeky Kea also runs a small-group Mt Cook day tour from Tekapo at $157, rated 4.3 from 56 reviews. Our Tekapo Shuttle breakdown has the full timings.

The 2-day tour with stargazing

If one long day sounds too rushed, FiveE Travel’s Christchurch Lake Tekapo stargazing & Mount Cook 2-day tour ($331, rated 5.0 from 9 reviews) spreads the same ground over two days. Day one goes via Lake Pūkaki and a lavender farm (open October to April) to Mount Cook for lunch and the Hooker Valley, then to Tekapo for an evening of stargazing at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Day two visits the church by daylight, the Mt John lookout, Burkes Pass, an alpaca farm and Fairlie before a drop-off in Christchurch around 4:30pm. You book your own Tekapo accommodation and pay for your own meals, and the group is nine at most.

Tekapo sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, which covers 4,367 km² including the national park. For a dedicated night tour with telescopes, compare the options on our sister site’s guide to Lake Tekapo stargazing tours.

One-way tours that pass both

If you are traveling between Queenstown and Christchurch anyway, a one-way tour covers both lakes and the mountain on the transfer day. Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook tour ($217, rated 4.7 from 124 reviews) gives about three hours in the national park, then photo stops at Lake Pūkaki and Lake Tekapo, with a luggage allowance of one large and one small bag. In the other direction, Cheeky Kea’s Christchurch to Queenstown via Tekapo & Mt Cook ($228, rated 4.7 from 208 reviews) includes a Fairlie Bakehouse lunch, 15 minutes at Tekapo and about 2.5 hours at Mount Cook. More Queenstown options are in our Queenstown tours guide.

Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook: which to prioritize

They suit different parts of a trip. Tekapo is the town, with the lake, the church, supermarkets and the night-sky tours. Mount Cook Village is a very small alpine village at the end of SH80 with the walks, the glaciers and the flights. If you have only a few hours, spend them at Mount Cook and treat Tekapo as the stop on the way. If you have a night, stay in Tekapo for the stars and drive to Mount Cook in the morning. Fuel is available in the village from a card-only self-service pump, but Tekapo and Twizel are the places to fill up and buy food.

One thing to know before you go: until about 8 October 2026, SH80 between Pūkaki and Mount Cook has stop/go roadworks and a 30 km/h limit, which can add a few minutes to any tour.
