What drives the price
- Minutes in the air. A 25-minute helicopter flight costs about $220, a 55-minute one $500 to $525. Each step up buys more of the Tasman Glacier or a crossing to the West Coast.
- Where you land. Alpine landings on a mountainside are the cheapest. A landing on the Tasman Glacier starts at $314 with the combo.
- Guiding and gear. The Tasman heli hike includes a mountain guide, boots and crampons and up to two hours on the ice, which is why it starts at $569.
- Distance from the park. Lake Tekapo is about an hour and a quarter from the village and Christchurch about four hours, which is much of why the Tekapo Shuttle costs less.
- What is included. Lunch, hotel pickup and the Hillary Alpine Centre come with some tours and not others; check the table before comparing headline prices.
Best value at each budget
Under $100, book the Tekapo Shuttle day tour. You get about nine hours with roughly four and a half at the park, enough for the Tasman Glacier view and the full Hooker Valley Track, which the Christchurch day tours, with around two to two and a half hours at the park, cannot fit.
From $134 to $169, the Christchurch and Queenstown day tours are the way to go if you have no car; our Christchurch and Queenstown guides compare them. Around $220 buys a 25-minute helicopter flight, and $314 buys the combo, the cheapest way to stand on the Tasman Glacier from the Mount Cook side. Our helicopter tours guide and scenic flights guide explain what each flight adds. At $569 the Tasman heli hike is the most time on the ice for the money.
What families pay
GetYourGuide and Viator show adult prices, so for families the operators’ own NZD child and family rates matter more. These are the operator’s own NZD rates at the time of writing, not marketplace prices:
| Tour (operator NZD rates) | Adult | Child | Family or infants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tekapo Shuttle day trip | NZ$149 | NZ$119 (3–14) | Ages 1–2 free |
| Cheeky Kea day tour from Christchurch | NZ$275 | NZ$225 (4–14) | — |
| Glacier Explorers boat, from 1 October 2026 | NZ$219 (15+) | NZ$99 (4–14) | NZ$575 (2 adults + 2 children) |
| Ski plane + helicopter combo (Ultimate Alpine Experience) | NZ$599 (12+) | NZ$499 (0–12) | Infants need a charged seat |
| Glacier Highlights, ski plane or helicopter | NZ$699 (12+) | NZ$649 (0–12) | Infants need a charged seat |
| Air Safaris Grand Traverse, 2026–27 | NZ$535 | NZ$430 (3–13) | Ages 0–2 free on a lap |
| Glenorchy Air Fly Explore Fly | NZ$959 (15+) | NZ$809 (9–14) | Ages 0–2 under 15 kg free |
| Mount Cook Glacier Guiding heli hike, 2026–27 | NZ$995 | NZ$995 (9–16) | Minimum age 9 |
| Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, from 1 October 2026 | NZ$30 (15+) | NZ$16 (4–14) | Under-4s free |
The Helicopter Line does not publish child rates for its Mount Cook flights. Mount Cook Glacier Guiding’s heli hike charges children the full adult rate, so the combo flight is the cheaper way to get a family onto the glacier.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Parking. The Hooker Valley Track starts at DOC’s White Horse Hill car park, which costs $2.50 per 30 minutes or $25 a day, by card only, and is free for stays under 20 minutes. The Tasman Valley car park is free. Entry to the national park itself is free.
- Meals. Most day tours and every flight exclude lunch. The Tekapo Shuttle asks you to bring your own.
- Getting to the airport. Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters runs free transfers from village accommodation, and the combo includes parking at Mount Cook Airport. Air Safaris does not include hotel pickup, and parking at Queenstown Airport for Glenorchy Air costs up to NZ$20 for the day.
- Fuel surcharges. Air Safaris may charge one at check-in, and Southern Lakes Helicopters has added a temporary fuel surcharge since 1 April 2026.
- Fuel for your own car. Mount Cook Village has a card-only self-service pump; the nearest full-service stations are in Twizel and Lake Tekapo.
- Child seats. On Cheeky Kiwi’s Queenstown small-group tour, child safety seats cost NZ$20 to rent.
Helicopter ride prices in New Zealand, 2026–27
The tables above are the Mount Cook tours you can book on GetYourGuide or Viator, in US dollars. This part of the page covers helicopter flights across New Zealand at the operators’ own New Zealand dollar prices, so you can see what a Mount Cook flight costs against Franz Josef, Fox, Queenstown, Wānaka, Kaikōura and the North Island.
A shared helicopter ride in New Zealand costs about NZ$160–330 for a 10–15-minute flight, NZ$360–400 for a 20–25-minute flight with a snow landing, NZ$600–975 for 40–60 minutes, and NZ$1,400–2,100 for a Milford Sound half-day. A private helicopter costs about NZ$2,500–5,000 per flying hour. Several big operators raised prices on 1 October 2026, so many reseller listings are already out of date.
A helicopter flight is the most expensive hour many visitors spend in New Zealand, and it’s often the best one too. Below are the main South Island bases and the main North Island ones, with what you’ll pay this season, which flights give the most for the money, and the small print (weight limits, child fares, weather refunds) that resellers don’t show you. All prices are per adult in New Zealand dollars, GST-inclusive.
Prices last checked: 1 October 2026, with Air Safaris, The Helicopter Line and Mt Cook Glacier Guiding re-checked on 4 October 2026. Most operators’ prices are valid 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027 where they say so. Currency conversions use the Reserve Bank of New Zealand rate for 30 September 2026 (NZ$1 = US$0.564 / £0.426 / €0.497).
Quick answer: how much is a helicopter ride in New Zealand?
- 10–15 minutes (no landing): NZ$159–330 (about US$90–186).
- 20–25 minutes with a snow or alpine landing: NZ$360–395 (about US$203–223). This is the most common “first helicopter ride” in New Zealand.
- 30–35 minutes: NZ$450–595 (about US$254–336).
- 40–45 minutes: NZ$595–699 (about US$336–394).
- 55–60 minutes: NZ$595–975 (about US$336–550).
- Milford Sound from Queenstown (90 minutes to half a day): NZ$1,395–2,090 (about US$787–1,179).
- Private charter: roughly NZ$2,500–5,000 per flying hour, or NZ$1,750–2,025 for a private 25-minute Queenstown flight.
The best value per minute comes from Mount Cook and Glacier Country flights, which cost about the same per minute (NZ$14.50–17.50), and from the longer Grand Circle-style flights and the West Coast “Fox to Mount Cook” routes. Wānaka’s Aspiring Helicopters (NZ$595 for 60 minutes with two landings, before its 1 October 2026 increase) and the fixed-wing Grand Traverse (NZ$535 for 50 minutes) are cheaper still per minute. To pay less, book direct on the operator’s own site to see the current 2026–27 price, use BookMe for 9–22% last-minute discounts, leave one or two spare weather days, and check child, infant and weight rules before you book: a 116–135 kg cap is common, and some operators make heavier passengers buy a “comfort seat”.

What this means: the jump from “joyride” to “real alpine flight” happens at about 20 minutes. Below that you rarely get a landing, and the per-minute cost is the highest. A 20–25-minute flight with a snow landing at NZ$360–395 is the sweet spot for most first-timers.
How much is a 15-minute helicopter ride in NZ?
A 15-minute helicopter ride costs NZ$249–330 in 2026. Heli Adventure Flights’ Taste of Taupō lists from NZ$249. Volcanic Air’s Rotorua Crater Lakes flight is NZ$305 adult and NZ$229 child. Air Safaris’ Tekapo Highlights is NZ$330 on its 2026–27 price list, up from NZ$290. Flights this short almost never include a landing.
How much is a 30-minute helicopter ride in NZ?
A 30-minute helicopter ride with a landing costs NZ$450–495 in most places, and NZ$595 for The Helicopter Line’s 35-minute Alpine Explorer at Glentanner, near Mount Cook. The cheapest landing flights are Air Safaris’ Mackenzie Explorer from Lake Tekapo (NZ$450 on the 2026–27 list) and Mountain Helicopters’ 30-minute Mt Cook & Fox Glacier flight with a snow landing (NZ$460). Kaikōura Helicopters’ 30-minute Classic Whale Watch is NZ$420 with no landing.

Mount Cook helicopter ride price: the verdict. Expect to pay NZ$379–395 for a 25-minute flight with a landing at Mount Cook, and NZ$799–925 for the 55-minute flights that cross the Main Divide to see Franz Josef and Fox. On per-minute cost INFLITE is cheaper than The Helicopter Line: NZ$14.50 a minute for the Grand Circle against NZ$16.80 for Mount Cook & the Glaciers. If you want a guaranteed snow landing, the Ultimate Alpine Experience lands on the Tasman Glacier by ski plane; the helicopter-only Tasman Taster states that snow cannot be guaranteed.
Lake Tekapo flights add 20–30 minutes of transit, but they include the turquoise lake and high-country stations. Air Safaris requires a minimum of 4 passengers and sets a 130 kg per-person weight limit on most helicopter flights and 120 kg on the Mackenzie Explorer. Its 2026–27 list raised the fixed-wing Grand Traverse by about 8% (NZ$495 to NZ$535) and its helicopter fares by 11–15% (the Mackenzie Explorer went from NZ$395 to NZ$450).

The cheapest helicopter ride on the West Coast is Mountain Helicopters’ 10-minute overflight at NZ$179 (the widely quoted “from NZ$159” is last season’s price). The cheapest snow landing is the same company’s 20-minute flight at NZ$360. Flights that include Aoraki/Mount Cook from the West Coast cost NZ$460–495. That is NZ$100 less than The Helicopter Line’s 35-minute Alpine Explorer from Glentanner (NZ$595), though you see Mount Cook’s western face, not the Tasman Glacier side. For heli-hikes on both glaciers, see our heli-hiking guide to Franz Josef, Fox and Mount Cook.
Family tip: HeliServices.NZ halves child fares and lets infants 3 years and under (and under 15 kg) fly free on a lap. Its family package was NZ$1,020 for 2 adults and 2 children until 30 September 2026; check whether it has been renewed.
Queenstown helicopter prices (incl. Remarkables, Glenorchy and Milford Sound)
Queenstown has the most competition, the widest range (NZ$375 to NZ$20,000) and the clearest published 2026–27 price increases. For the flights and coach tours from Queenstown to Mount Cook, see our Mount Cook tours from Queenstown guide, and for Milford Sound, Glenorchy and the other day trips from Queenstown, our regional guide.

Milford Sound helicopter flight cost: the verdict. From Queenstown, a Milford Sound helicopter flight costs NZ$1,395 (GSL, 2026–27) for a 1.5–2-hour return with landings, and NZ$1,495–1,655 if you add a cruise. GSL’s Milford prices rose 13–18% on 1 October 2026, the biggest jump we found this year. A flight-and-cruise package now costs more than three times a fixed-wing fly-cruise-fly. Pay it if you want glacier landings and doorstep departures, not just a view of the Sound.
Remarkables: the short Queenstown “first-timer” flight now costs NZ$375–395 at all three main operators. BookMe regularly lists THL’s 20–25-minute Pilot’s Special and GSL’s Remarkables at about NZ$310–316 (19–20% off).
Glenorchy / Lord of the Rings flights: GSL and Heliworks both run Earnslaw Burn glacier flights. Resellers list Queenstown “Glacier Explorer & Earnslaw Burn” style flights at about 50–70 minutes, priced between THL’s Southern Glacier Experience (NZ$835) and a Milford overflight. Check the operator’s 2026–27 table before booking.
Wānaka helicopter prices
| Operator | Flight | Duration | Landing | Adult NZ$ | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aspiring Helicopters | Snow Landing scenic | 20 min | 1 snow/alpine | about 225 | Third-party listing; the operator also advertises a NZ$150 local special with a 10-min alpine landing |
| Aspiring Helicopters | Glacier Landing (Isobel Glacier) | 35 min | 1 glacier | about 450 | Third-party listing |
| Aspiring Helicopters | Mt Aspiring & Glaciers | about 60 min | 2 × 10-min landings | 595 (child 357) | Operator booking page. A temporary per-person fuel surcharge is added at checkout, and prices rise from 1 October 2026 |

| Wanaka Helicopters | Aspiring Snow Special / Mt Aspiring Explorer | 1 hr / 1 hr 15 | 1 / 2 | 870 / 1,000 (2-passenger minimum) | Operator page |
Verdict: Aspiring Helicopters’ Mt Aspiring & Glaciers flight was the best-value 60-minute alpine flight we found in New Zealand, at under NZ$10 a minute with two landings. Prices change from 1 October 2026 and a fuel surcharge applies, so confirm the final figure at checkout.
Kaikōura, Christchurch and Lake Tekapo
| Operator | Flight | Duration | Adult NZ$ | Notes |

| Garden City Helicopters (Christchurch) | Christchurch City Scenic | 20 min | 350–385 | NZ$385 per person for 1–2 people, NZ$350 per person for 3+ |
| Garden City Helicopters | YouFly trial flight | About 1 hr | 420 | You take the controls |
| Garden City Helicopters | Kaikōura Whales Heli-Tour / Mount Cook Experience | 3 hr / 3 hr | 2,750 / 3,499 (minimum 2) | Full-day-style flights from Christchurch |
Kaikōura whale flights work out at about NZ$12.50–14 a minute. Kaikōura Helicopters’ newzealand.com listing says “We see whales 97% of the time” but offers no refund if you don’t, while Whale Watch Kaikōura’s boats quote a 95% sperm-whale success rate and guarantee an 80% refund. Both operators raised prices sharply this year (Classic Whale Watch +17%). Christchurch city flights cost about the same as a Mount Cook snow landing without the mountains, so most visitors get more from driving to Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook (see our guide to Mount Cook tours from Christchurch). Lake Tekapo’s helicopter prices are in the Mount Cook table above.
North Island helicopter prices (brief)
| Location | Operator | Flight | Adult NZ$ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taupō | Heli Adventure Flights | Huka by Heli, 9 min / Taste of Taupō, 15 min / Mountain Magic, 90 min | from 159 / 249 / 1,049 |
| Rotorua | Volcanic Air | Crater Lakes, about 15 min (minimum 4 adult fares) | 305 (child 229) |
| Rotorua | Volcanic Air | Eruption Trail & Mt Tarawera volcano landing | 630 (child 473) |
| Rotorua | Volcanic Air | Mount Tarawera Volcanic Adventure / Tarawera + Ōrākei Kōrako | 950 / 1,395 |
Taupō has New Zealand’s cheapest helicopter ride (NZ$159 for 9 minutes over Huka Falls). Rotorua’s Mt Tarawera crater landing is the North Island’s standout landing flight for its price. Auckland and Waiheke scenic flights are offered by operators such as Heletranz (part of the INFLITE group), but we could not verify 2026–27 per-seat prices, so they are not included here.
What’s the cheapest helicopter ride in NZ?
- Huka by Heli, Taupō: NZ$159 for 9 minutes. The cheapest helicopter ride in New Zealand we found.
- Aspiring Helicopters local special, Wānaka: NZ$150, advertised with a 10-minute alpine landing. Availability is limited and conditions apply.
- Mountain Helicopters, Fox Glacier: NZ$179 for 10 minutes over the glacier. The cheapest glacier helicopter flight.
- Taste of Taupō: NZ$249 for 15 minutes.
- Volcanic Air Crater Lakes, Rotorua: NZ$305 for about 15 minutes (minimum 4 adult fares). Air Safaris’ Tekapo Highlights is now NZ$330.
For the cheapest snow landing, look at Mountain Helicopters (NZ$360, 20 minutes), GSL’s Remarkables (NZ$375) or INFLITE’s Tasman Taster (NZ$379), or BookMe deals at about NZ$300–316.

| Mountain Helicopters 10-min overflight | 179 | 10 | 17.90 | 0 |
Minutes are each operator’s stated duration or “allow” time. Some of that is landing time on the ground, so the true airborne cost per minute is a little higher.
What the numbers say:
- Longer flights cost less per minute. Most 55–60-minute alpine flights cost NZ$14–17 a minute, while 10-minute joyrides cost about NZ$18.
- A landing doesn’t add much. Mountain Helicopters charges NZ$349 for a 20-minute twin-glacier overflight and NZ$360 for a 20-minute flight with a snow landing. The landing costs about NZ$11 extra, and you get to stand on the snow.
- If seeing the mountains matters more to you than landing, fixed-wing is the budget choice. The Grand Traverse shows you Mount Cook, the Tasman, Franz Josef and Fox for NZ$535, with every seat a window seat but no landing. See Helicopter vs Ski Plane at Mount Cook.
What drives helicopter tour cost?
- Flight time vs total experience time. “Allow 25 mins” usually covers flying plus a 5–10-minute landing. Check-in and the safety briefing add another 30–60 minutes that isn’t in the advertised duration.
- Landings. Snow and glacier landings in national parks run under Department of Conservation concessions, and that cost is built into the fare.
- Fuel. Aspiring Helicopters currently adds a temporary per-person fuel surcharge. GSL and Air Safaris both state that fuel surcharges may apply.
- Aircraft type. Most scenic flights use 6-passenger Airbus AS350/H125 “Squirrels” or EC130/H130s. Heliworks prices its Milford Fiordland’s Finest charter at NZ$9,975 in a Squirrel, NZ$11,970 in an H130 and NZ$13,965 in a twin-engine Squirrel: a 20–40% premium for the bigger-window, quieter or twin-engine machines.
- Shared vs private. Shared seats are priced per person. Private charters are priced per aircraft (see below).
- Minimum numbers. Air Safaris needs 4 passengers, Volcanic Air 4 adult fares, and HeliServices.NZ and Wanaka Helicopters 2. If the minimum isn’t met, your flight may be moved or cancelled.
- Weight and seating. Seats are assigned by weight for balance, so you can’t always choose a front seat. The Helicopter Line’s machines carry up to 6 passengers or 480 kg combined.
- Season and demand. Base fares usually change once a year on 1 October (1 September at Kaikōura and Garden City Helicopters). Discounts appear on quieter days in the shoulder season and winter.
- GST. New Zealand consumer prices include 15% GST. Mountain Helicopters states this explicitly. Training and some charter rates are quoted “+GST”, so check.
Do kids pay full price? Child and infant rules
| Operator | Child age | Child price vs adult | Infants |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Helicopter Line (Franz Josef) | 14 & under | About 70% (NZ$270 vs NZ$385) | “Infant charges apply” |
| Glacier Southern Lakes | 0–11 | About 72% | Counted as children (0–11) |
| Heliworks | 3–11 | About 70% | 0–2: NZ$830 on the Milford Heli-Cruise-Heli |
| Air Safaris | 3–13 | About 80% | Infant fares NZ$165–490 |
| Aspiring Helicopters | — | About 60% (NZ$357 vs NZ$595) | Infant fare NZ$357 listed |
| HeliServices.NZ | 4–14 | 50% | 3 and under and under 15 kg fly free on a lap |
| Kaikōura Helicopters / Garden City Helicopters | 3+ | No child discount | 0–2 free on a lap |
| Volcanic Air | 2–11 | About 75% | Under 2 free |
Bottom line: children usually pay 50–80% of the adult fare. Under-2s often fly free on a lap, but not everywhere: Air Safaris and Heliworks charge infant fares, and INFLITE at Mount Cook charges for infants because they take a seat.
How much does it cost to charter a helicopter in NZ per hour?
Expect NZ$2,500–5,000 per flying hour for a private Squirrel-class helicopter carrying up to 5–6 people:
- Mountain Helicopters (Fox): exclusive 1-hour charter from NZ$2,500 for either 1–2 or 3–4 passengers, with all fares stated as inclusive of 15% GST. This is the cheapest published hourly-equivalent rate we found.
- The Helicopter Line Queenstown (Charters page): NZ$1,750 per helicopter for the 25-minute Pilot’s Choice or Queenstown Panorama (about NZ$4,200 an hour), and NZ$1,925 for the 35-minute Grand Circle – First and Final; NZ$4,175 for the 50-minute Southern Glacier Experience (about NZ$5,000 an hour).
- GSL Remarkables private Squirrel: from NZ$2,025 (2026–27, up from NZ$1,730).
- Heli Me’s blog (15 January 2026) says New Zealand charter customers can “expect to pay anywhere between $2000 per hour and $4000 per hour”.
- For reference, Aviation Training’s AS350 B2 training rate is NZ$3,200 + GST an hour, and it notes that commercial charter rates are usually higher.
When private is cheaper than shared: six shared seats on THL’s Queenstown Panorama cost 6 × NZ$385 = NZ$2,310, against NZ$1,750 to book the whole helicopter. On a short Queenstown flight, a group of five or six should always price the private option.
Helicopter vs fixed-wing scenic flight cost
| Experience | Helicopter | Fixed-wing |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Cook + glaciers, about 50–55 min | NZ$799–925 (INFLITE Grand Circle / THL Mount Cook & the Glaciers) | NZ$535 (Air Safaris Grand Traverse from Tekapo or Franz Josef, 2026–27); NZ$560 from Glentanner |
| Glacier landing | NZ$379–699 | INFLITE Tasman Discovery ski plane NZ$429 (25 min, snow landing on the Tasman Glacier) |
| Milford Sound from Queenstown | NZ$1,395–2,090 | Much cheaper by plane, such as Air Milford’s Milford Sound & Big 5 Glaciers scenic flight |
Fixed-wing gets you the views for about a third less. A helicopter gets you landings, lower flying and more flexibility in marginal weather. If the snow landing is the whole point of your trip, the ski plane at Mount Cook is the cheapest way to get it.
Helicopter tour deals and discounts
- Book direct to see the current price. On 1 October 2026 operators’ own pages already showed new prices: THL Mount Cook +NZ$10–50, INFLITE +NZ$50, GSL Milford +NZ$170–215, Over The Top +NZ$95, Kaikōura +NZ$60–115, and Air Safaris +NZ$40–125. Resellers such as GetYourGuide, Viator and Tripadvisor still showed older prices, often converted into US dollars with fees added.
- BookMe last-minute deals: examples we saw include THL Alpine Vista from NZ$300 (22% off), Alpine Explorer NZ$452 (20% off), THL Queenstown Pilot’s Special NZ$310, GSL Remarkables NZ$316, Heliworks Remarkables NZ$360, Wānaka Max NZ$395 (from NZ$500) and INFLITE Glacier Highlights from NZ$454. Discounts are usually 9–22% and limited to certain times.

For heli-hikes see our heli-hiking comparison.
- Family packages: HeliServices.NZ’s family deal was NZ$1,020 (2 adults + 2 children) until 30 September 2026.
- Gift vouchers: The Helicopter Line sells NZ$50–1,000 gift cards for each base. Kaikōura Helicopters’ vouchers are valid for 3 years. If you buy before 1 October, find out whether the voucher is for a fixed value or for a specific flight. Our guide to special-occasion flights compares voucher validity across the Mount Cook operators.
- Quality signals: Tourism New Zealand awarded INFLITE & Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters Qualmark Gold in 2017. Choose Qualmark-rated, CAA-certificated operators over the cheapest quote.
How to book a helicopter flight (and when)
- Peak season (December–February, plus Easter and Chinese New Year): book 1–2 weeks ahead for popular morning slots, and longer for private charters and Milford.
- Build in weather buffers. Book on your first full day in the area so there’s time to reschedule. Morning flights are typically calmer.
- Reconfirm the day before. The Helicopter Line, GSL and Mountain Helicopters all ask you to reconfirm.
- Declare accurate weights. Weights are checked on the day (see below).
- Arrive early. Mountain Helicopters asks for arrival at least 30 minutes before departure, and late arrivals forfeit the slot and pay in full.
Can I get a refund if my flight is cancelled? Cancellation policies by operator
| Operator | If the operator cancels (weather) | If you cancel |
|---|---|---|
| The Helicopter Line | Use your voucher at any THL base for a similar flight, or get a full refund | Full refund or credit with 24 hours’ notice; no refund under 24 hours or for no-shows |
| INFLITE / Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters | Full refund or free reschedule; the go/no-go decision can come as late as about 10 minutes before departure | Live FAQ says 48 hours for a full refund (older versions and resellers say 24 hours) |
| Glacier Southern Lakes | Transfer to another day or cancel at no charge | Full refund over 24 hours; 100% fee within 24 hours. Groups of 3+ helicopters: 50% fee at 7–3 days, 100% within 3 days |
| Mountain Helicopters (Fox) | Full refund if they can’t reschedule | Full charge if under 24 hours, late or no-show |
Hidden costs on helicopter flights
- Credit card fees: GSL charges 1.5%.
- Public holiday surcharges: GSL adds 20% on Christmas Day.
- Fuel surcharges: Aspiring Helicopters (current), GSL and Air Safaris (“may apply”).
- Weight-related charges:
- Glacier Country Helicopters requires passengers of 120 kg or more to buy a “comfort seat”.
- Heletranz says passengers over 100 kg may have to pay for a comfort seat.
- Volcanic Air may surcharge over 110 kg and charges two adult fares over 135 kg.
- Weight limits: INFLITE generally caps individuals at 116 kg, Air Safaris at 130 kg (120 kg on the Mackenzie Explorer) and Mountain Helicopters at 135 kg.
- THL may reschedule you if you weigh 15 kg or more above your declared weight. GSL may charge extra if it has to send a different or additional helicopter.
- Transfers: Glentanner and Mount Cook Airport are 20–25 minutes’ drive from Mount Cook Village, and Aspiring Helicopters is about 25 minutes from Wānaka. Queenstown operators often include hotel pickup.
- Photos and videos: some operators sell photo packages; Mountain Helicopters’ reviewers mention free landing photos.
- Travel insurance: a weather cancellation is refunded, but a missed connection or illness inside the 24–48-hour window usually isn’t.
Is a helicopter flight in New Zealand worth the money?
For most visitors, yes, if you fly long enough to land. A 20–25-minute flight with a snow landing (NZ$360–395) gets you onto ground you can’t otherwise reach, and that is what most people remember. Under 15 minutes you are paying a premium for the novelty. Over 45 minutes you see more, but the per-minute saving is small unless you cross the Main Divide (Mount Cook to the West Coast and back). If the regular routes don’t excite you, spend the money on a ski-plane glacier landing or a heli-hike instead of a longer shared flight. Don’t fly on a marginal-weather day just because it’s your last chance; the refund rules protect you, but the views won’t be there.

Answers to the most common helicopter price questions, from 15-minute flights to charters, weight limits and refunds, are in the FAQ below.
Prices move with the exchange rate
Operators price in New Zealand dollars, and the marketplaces show USD, so the figures in the table will drift as the exchange rate moves, and with season. Book on GetYourGuide for free cancellation up to 24 hours before, or direct if you want the operator’s child and family rates; Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters’ own bookings refund in full if you cancel at least 48 hours before check-in. Compare both for your date, then check availability for the Tekapo Shuttle day tour, or see the full comparison of every tour on the homepage.

Yes, entry to the national park is free, and so are its walks. The main cost for drivers is parking at DOC's White Horse Hill car park for the Hooker Valley Track: $2.50 per 30 minutes or $25 a day, by card only, and free for under 20 minutes. The Tasman Valley car park for the glacier view is free.
Drive yourself and walk, for the cost of fuel and parking. Without a car, the Tekapo Shuttle day tour is the cheapest tour here at $97, with time for the Tasman Glacier View Track and the full Hooker Valley Track. The cheapest landing on the glacier from the Mount Cook side is the $314 combo flight.
From Christchurch, from $134 with NZ South Island Tours or $157 with lunch included on Cheeky Kea's tour. From Queenstown, from $157 with Cheeky Kiwi Travel or $169 on Viator with Altitude Tours. One-way tours between the two cities cost $217 to $228. See our Christchurch guide.
Slightly, for the shortest flights. The 25-minute alpine landing flight at Mount Cook is from $217, against $228 for the 30-minute Franz Josef flight that lands on the Tasman Glacier and $277 for the Fox Glacier and Mount Cook flight. Check the departure point, because the West Coast flights start on the other side of the Alps.
Operators sell them direct, in NZD. The Tekapo Shuttle charges NZ$119 for children 3 to 14, Glacier Explorers NZ$575 for two adults and two children, and Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters NZ$499 for a child on the combo. Mount Cook Glacier Guiding's heli hike charges children the adult rate. These are operator rates at the time of writing.
The simplest saving is choosing the right product. The ski plane and helicopter combo at $314 lands on the same Tasman Glacier snowfields as Glacier Highlights at $380, and the 25-minute helicopter flights cost almost the same from either base. Prices also move with the NZD exchange rate, so compare on your date.
GetYourGuide bookings on this site can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters' own bookings refund in full if you cancel at least 48 hours before check-in. If weather cancels a flight or boat trip, operators offer another time or a full refund. Every major helicopter operator we checked does the same, and most of them need 24 hours' notice if you cancel yourself.
It depends on the tour and the exchange rate. The marketplaces show USD per person with free cancellation on GetYourGuide up to 24 hours before, while operators quote NZD and sell the child and family rates that often suit families better. Glacier Explorers is only sold direct. Compare both for your date.
Most shared scenic helicopter rides cost NZ$360–395 for 20–25 minutes with a snow landing, and NZ$600–975 for 40–60 minutes, at the operators' own 2026–27 rates. The cheapest start at NZ$159 (Taupō, 9 minutes). See the New Zealand helicopter price tables above.
About NZ$450–595 with a landing. Lake Tekapo (Air Safaris' Mackenzie Explorer, NZ$450) and Fox Glacier (Mountain Helicopters, NZ$460) are the cheapest with landings; The Helicopter Line's 35-minute Alpine Explorer at Glentanner is NZ$595. Kaikōura's 30-minute whale watch is NZ$420 without a landing.
NZ$249–330. Examples are Taste of Taupō (NZ$249), Rotorua Crater Lakes (NZ$305) and Air Safaris' Tekapo Highlights (NZ$330). Flights this short rarely land.
Heli Adventure Flights' Huka by Heli in Taupō, from NZ$159 for 9 minutes. The cheapest glacier flight is Mountain Helicopters' 10-minute Fox Glacier overflight at NZ$179.
NZ$179 for a 10-minute overflight, NZ$360–395 for a 20–25-minute snow landing, and NZ$460–495 for flights that include Aoraki/Mount Cook, at the operators' own 2026–27 rates.
From Queenstown, NZ$1,395 (Glacier Southern Lakes, 2026–27) for the flight with landings, NZ$1,495–1,655 with a cruise, and up to NZ$2,090 for Over The Top's half-day.

Usually not: children pay 50–80% of the adult fare, and under-2s often fly free on a lap. Kaikōura Helicopters and Garden City Helicopters have no child discount for ages 3 and over, and INFLITE at Mount Cook charges for infants because they take a seat.
Yes. Consumer scenic-flight prices in New Zealand include 15% GST. Some charter and training rates are quoted "+GST", so check.
