How the Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo Day Tour Works

Four steps from a Christchurch hotel pickup to the Tasman Glacier and back.

  1. Book and get your pickup time

Book on GetYourGuide from $134 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The tour starts around 6:30am from central Christchurch hotels or the Bus Interchange, and the exact pickup time is emailed the day before.

  2. Geraldine and Lake Tekapo

After about 105 minutes across the Canterbury Plains, you stop for coffee in Geraldine, then spend 30 minutes at Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd before a 15-minute stop at Lake Pūkaki.

  3. The Tasman Glacier walk

In the national park, the itinerary allows about 1.5 hours at the Tasman Glacier, where you walk the Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier View track at your own pace. Walks in the park are not guided.

  4. Back across the plains

The drive home breaks briefly at Lake Tekapo and Geraldine, and you are dropped at your Christchurch hotel after 13 hours or more. The minibus has Wi-Fi, bottled water and light snacks, and the tour runs in all weather.

Christchurch to Mount Cook: Which Tour to Book

Return day trips, one-way tours to Queenstown and the overnight stargazing option, with the time each gives you at the mountain.

A day trip to Mount Cook from Christchurch is possible but long, and the tour to book is NZSI’s Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo Day Tour, from $134 per person. It is the lowest price among the well-reviewed Christchurch day tours, rated 4.8 from 639 reviews, and it stops at Lake Tekapo, the Church of the Good Shepherd and Lake Pūkaki before the Tasman Glacier walk. Plan on 13 hours or more door to door, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

How long it takes, and how much time you get at the mountain

Mount Cook Village is about 330 km from Christchurch, roughly four hours of driving each way before any stops. That is why every Christchurch day tour runs about 13 hours, and why the time at the mountain is short: about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the operator.

NZSI’s itinerary allows about 1.5 hours at the Tasman Glacier area, which is enough for the Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier View walk. The operator puts that walk at about 60 minutes return at moderate fitness, and DOC describes a steep climb of more than 300 steps up the moraine wall to a view over Tasman Lake and New Zealand’s longest glacier, about 23 km of ice. Cheeky Kea’s Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo Day Tour gives 2 to 2.5 hours in the park, and so does Cheeky Kiwi’s Mt Cook & Tekapo Day Tour on Viator. Cheeky Kea warns that park time can be less than advertised when the roads are slow.

On the way, the tours stop in Geraldine or at Fairlie Bakehouse, then at Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd, then at Lake Pūkaki for the first long view of Aoraki/Mount Cook at the far end of the lake. Those stops are what the extra hour of driving over Queenstown buys you.

Why the full Hooker Valley walk does not fit

The Hooker Valley Track is 10 km return. DOC gives three hours of walking time and suggests allowing three to four, so it does not fit into 1.5 to 2.5 hours, even now the new 189 m suspension bridge has reopened the full route. On a Christchurch day tour, choose one of these instead:

WalkDistance and time (DOC)Fits a Christchurch day tour?
Tasman Glacier View Track1.5 km return, 30 min, 300+ steps✓ Yes, with time to spare
Tasman Lake and River Track2.5 km return, about 50 min, no steps✓ Yes
Hooker Valley to the first swing bridge1 km each way, about 15 min each way✓ Yes
Hooker Valley to the second swing bridge2.5 km each way, about 45 min each wayOnly on a 2 to 2.5 hour stop
Full Hooker Valley Track to Hooker Lake10 km return, 3 h walking, allow 3–4 h✗ No

If the Hooker Valley is the reason you are going, sleep closer to the park or book a Queenstown tour, which gives about three hours. Our Mount Cook day tours guide compares the park time on every kind of day tour.

Which Christchurch tour to choose

NZSI is the one to book for price and reviews. Its groups are capped at 20, it does not pick up other passengers along the route, and the minibus has Wi-Fi. Walks in the park are not guided. On lunch, the operator says bookings from 1 October 2026 carry a higher price that includes a packed lunch, while earlier, lower-priced bookings do not, so check what your booking includes and bring food if it has none. Our NZSI tour breakdown has the full itinerary.

Choose Cheeky Kea’s tour, from $157 and rated 4.7 from 454 reviews, if you want a smaller group and more time. It takes no more than 11 guests in a Mercedes Sprinter, includes a picnic lunch pre-ordered from a local bakery, and allows 2 to 2.5 hours in the park, where you pick the Tasman Glacier View Track, part of the Hooker Valley or the village. It runs in all weather except road closures, with a refund if a closure stops the tour.

If you want to see the mountain from the air, the day tours can fit a flight into the park stop. NZSI can arrange a scenic flight in place of the walk, and Cheeky Kea sells a 14-hour version with a 45-minute ski plane and helicopter flight that lands on the upper Tasman Glacier. For the flights themselves, see our helicopter tours guide.

One way: Christchurch to Queenstown via Mount Cook

If you are travelling on to Queenstown, a one-way tour turns the transfer into the sightseeing day. Cheeky Kea’s Christchurch to Queenstown via Tekapo & Mt Cook is 13 hours, from $228 and rated 4.7 from 208 reviews. It follows the same morning as the day tour, with lunch from Fairlie Bakehouse, stops at Lake Tekapo and Lake Pūkaki and 2 to 2.5 hours in the park, then carries on past High Country Salmon, over the Lindis Pass and through the Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown. Our one-way tour breakdown covers each stop.

GreatSights runs the same journey by coach as Mt. Cook Day-Tour: Christchurch to Queenstown, from $220 and rated 4.2 from 90 reviews. Its timetable gives about 1.5 hours at the Hermitage, from 12:55pm to 2:25pm, and lunch is extra.

To stay the night at Mount Cook, Cheeky Kiwi’s Christchurch to Mount Cook one-way tour, from $129, drops you in the park with a picnic lunch and one large and one small bag each. With an evening and a morning there, the full Hooker Valley walk fits easily.

The 2-day tour with stargazing

The Christchurch: Lake Tekapo Stargazing & Mount Cook 2-Day Tour, from $331 and rated 5.0 from nine reviews, is the slower option. Day one goes via Lake Pūkaki and a lavender farm (open October to April, with a lookout stop in other months) to Mount Cook Village for lunch and a walk on the Hooker Valley Track, then to Lake Tekapo for stargazing at the Church of the Good Shepherd, inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Groups are capped at nine. Accommodation in Tekapo and meals are not included, so book your own room, and the operator says full walks may not fit the schedule. More on the lake itself is in our Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo guide.

Christchurch wins for Lake Tekapo. Every Christchurch day tour takes in the lake and the Church of the Good Shepherd, and the day costs less. Queenstown wins for the mountain: an hour less driving, more time in the park, the full Hooker Valley walk, and the option to fly in and out with about five hours on the ground. Our Queenstown tours page covers those options.

If you are moving between the two cities, you do not have to choose. A one-way tour gives you Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook on the transfer day, in either direction. And if the full Hooker Valley and Lake Tekapo both matter, spend a night: the 2-day tour or a one-way drop at Mount Cook gives you time for both.

Weather and winter

NZSI and Cheeky Kea run their Christchurch day tours in all weather, so the mountain may be in cloud on the day. What stops them is a road closure, and snow can close State Highway 80 in winter. Until about 8 October 2026, stop/go roadworks with a 30 km/h limit between Pūkaki and Mount Cook add short delays. Every GetYourGuide tour on this page can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, so you can watch the forecast before you commit. When you have a date, check availability for the NZSI day tour.

"The guide is really nice and had a great day from Christchurch to tekapo and mt cook!"

Hannah Australia

"Great day trip! Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us with low hanging fog for most of the day limiting our views of Mt Cook, although the ice bergs in the River ( after a short hike) were incredibly. Despite that you get an absolute sense of the how spectacular the scenery is. Our guide went out of his way to make the best of the situation with a few extra stops etc. While it sounds like a long day, it definitely doesn’t feel that way and I highly recommend this to anyone"

Jeff Australia

"Great tour! Our guide and driver was excellent, very well organizes tour"

Manuel Italy

"AJ was a top driver and guide. Very friendly and welcoming with great knowledge and the stops were planned well and the right amount of time at each stop. Good snacks that AJ was very generous with. Bonus was the lovely weather."
