How the Mt Cook & Hooker Valley Day Tour Works

Four steps from a Queenstown pickup to Hooker Lake and back.

  1. Book and choose a pickup

Book on GetYourGuide from $157 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Pick one of 28 pickup points, from central Queenstown hotels to Frankton and the Cromwell fruit sculpture.

  2. Kawarau Gorge to Lindis Pass

The minibus follows the Kawarau Gorge past Cromwell to a 15-minute stop at the Lindis Pass, then 30 minutes in Omarama. Buy or pack a light lunch here, because the park time goes to the walk.

  3. Lake Pūkaki and the Hooker Valley

A photo stop at Lake Pūkaki comes before about three hours on the self-guided Hooker Valley Track: 10 km return, three swing bridges and Hooker Lake at the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook.

  4. Salmon, fruit and the drive home

On the way back the group stops for about 15 minutes each at High Country Salmon and Jacksons Orchard, then returns over the same route to your Queenstown drop-off, about 12 hours after pickup.

Queenstown to Mount Cook: Which Day Trip to Book

Road tours, one-way tours, fly-in days and heli-hike packages, set out by time at the mountain.

Yes, Mount Cook works as a day trip from Queenstown, and the tour to book for most people is Cheeky Kiwi’s Mt Cook & Hooker Valley Day Tour, from $157 per person. It is a 12-hour small-group day with about three hours in the national park, which is enough to walk the full Hooker Valley Track to Hooker Lake now that the new suspension bridge has reopened the whole route. It is rated 4.7 from 575 reviews on GetYourGuide, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If you have more days in Queenstown, our guide to other day trips from Queenstown compares Milford Sound, Glenorchy and the rest.

How far it is, and where the day goes

Aoraki/Mount Cook Village is about 250 km from Queenstown, or just over three hours of driving with no stops. A tour stops for photos and food, so the road takes longer: Glenorchy Air puts it at 3.5 to 4 hours each way. On a 12-hour tour, that leaves roughly nine hours for the drive and its stops and about three at the mountain.

The highway is the same whichever road tour you take. You leave through the Kawarau Gorge, pass Cromwell and Lake Dunstan, climb to the tussock country of the Lindis Pass and stop for 30 minutes in Omarama. Then comes Lake Pūkaki, turquoise from glacial flour, and State Highway 80 up its western shore to the village where the road ends. Most tours break the drive home at High Country Salmon and, in season, Jacksons Orchard.

If you are driving yourself, the village has only a card-only, self-service fuel pump, so fill up in Twizel. Until about 8 October 2026, SH80 between Pūkaki and Mount Cook also has stop/go roadworks with a 30 km/h limit, so expect short delays.

Which road tour to choose

Book the Hooker Valley tour if the walk is the reason you are going. The track is 10 km return on gravel, crosses three swing bridges and ends at Hooker Lake beneath the mountain. DOC gives three hours of walking time and suggests allowing three to four, so this tour’s three hours on the track is enough at a steady pace, with little spare. The second bridge, a new 189 m suspension span and the longest in New Zealand, opened on 28 July 2026, so the full walk is open again. Bring a light lunch or buy one in Omarama, since you are on the track for the whole stop. The operator does not recommend it for people with low fitness. Our breakdown of the Hooker Valley tour covers the day in detail.

Choose Cheeky Kiwi’s small-group scenic day tour if you want 2.5 to 3 hours to use as you like: a shorter walk, the visitor center, a coffee at the Hermitage, or a scenic flight or glacier hike added when you book (you give names and weights for flights). It provides booster seats for children aged 7 and under.

Altitude Tours gives the longest stop of the road tours on this page, about 3.5 hours in Mount Cook Village, with entry to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre included, pickup from 7:30am and no more than 16 people in a Mercedes Sprinter. It is booked on Viator, where it has 268 reviews at 4.9.

One-way tours from Queenstown

If you are heading north anyway, Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook turns the transfer into the sightseeing day. You get about three hours in the national park, a 10-minute stop at Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd, and drop-off at central Christchurch accommodation, with one large and one small bag each. It runs 13 hours, from $217. Our one-way tour breakdown has the stops.

There is no need for a separate bus if you want to stay at Mount Cook. Cheeky Kiwi’s Queenstown to Mt Cook one-way tour ($123, 4.9 from 16 reviews) drops you in the park with your luggage, and its Mt Cook to Queenstown one-way tour ($103) brings you back.

Flying in: less road, more mountain

The road tours spend three quarters of the day in the minibus. Flying cuts the journey from Queenstown to about an hour each way. Glenorchy Air’s Fly Explore Fly leaves at 9am, flies up the spine of the South Island to Aoraki/Mount Cook Airport and gives you about five hours on the ground, enough for the Hooker Valley and lunch at the Hermitage, before a return over the Lindis Pass. The fixed-wing plane lands on the airstrip, not on a glacier. The full day is about eight hours. It is also on GetYourGuide as Mount Cook Day Trip via Scenic Flight from $462, but the Viator listing has more reviews.

Heli-hike packages from Queenstown

Two packages put you on the Tasman Glacier and bring you back to Queenstown the same day. Cheeky Kiwi’s Heli-Hike and Bus Tour Combo ($692) drives you to the park, then a helicopter flies you onto the glacier for a two-hour guided hike, with boots, crampons or snowshoes supplied. Children must be 12 or older, the weight limit is 116 kg, and if the flight cannot run on your date you can take a full refund.

True South’s Tasman Glacier Heli-Hike from Queenstown ($1,170 on Viator, 4.9 from 82 reviews) flies you to Mount Cook in a fixed-wing plane, about an hour each way, then by helicopter onto the ice for up to two hours with Alpine Guides. It takes about seven hours, includes hotel transfers and needs at least four passengers. In bad weather the operator may move you to the Franz Josef side. Our Tasman Glacier heli-hike guide compares every heli hike on the glacier.

A day trip, or a night at Mount Cook?

Twelve hours is a long day in a minibus. Staying a night makes sense if you want both the Hooker Valley and a flight, or quieter walks. DOC warns that the White Horse Hill car park, where the Hooker Valley Track starts, can fill between 10am and 4pm from November to March, exactly when day tours arrive. A one-way tour in and another back gives you the evening and the next morning on the track.

In winter, snow can close SH80, so check highway conditions before you travel, and expect ice on shaded parts of the Hooker Valley Track, where DOC recommends microspikes and poles. If you are still deciding whether to start in Queenstown or Christchurch, our Christchurch page compares the two bases. When you have a date, check availability for the Hooker Valley day tour.

"This is already my second tour with this company, and I’ve really enjoyed both experiences. Daniel, our guide, was incredibly kind and thoughtful. Since it was raining and windy, he made sure everyone had an umbrella so we could still do the hike comfortably. He also provided snacks and water and explained a little bit about each landscape along the way. Excellent company and a great experience!"

Carolina Australia

"Hanna was our guide on this tour. We are a group of friends and some took the full hook hooker valley and some took the half hooker valley with tasman glacier. Hanna is incredible, very knowledgable, patient and perfect for the tour. She explains everything with enthusiam. The full hooker valley is said to be 3hrs return but me and some of our friends finished it in 2hrs. So you can try to phase yourself and try not to rush hiking. The whole tour has been smooth from pick up from hotel up to the drop off. We enjoyed the tour and can say it was the highlight of our Queenstown holiday. Hanna is definitely 10 out of 10 and made our tour memorable."

Baltazar United Kingdom

The breathtaking mountain views, stunning alpine scenery, and peaceful beauty of Hooker Valley made the journey truly special. A big thank you to Ms Hanna for her friendly nature, excellent guidance, and making our day so enjoyable. The entire tour was well organised and filled with wonderful memories. One of the true highlights of our New Zealand trip! 🏔️🇳🇿"

Robert Australia

"It was wonderful, perfect, amazing, lovely and more. No word would be enough to describe my day trip. In addition to that Coach Hanna was the best. She kept me in the front seat of vehicle that enhanced by day. Moreover, Hanna shared lots of interesting, exciting histories, facts, nature and more from the beginning of trip until the end. She is fantastic and very knowledgeable. Coach made trip so easy, comfortable and smooth. It’s worth trip, I could not believe that such beauty really exists and I feel lucky that I was able to explore the beauty of South Island."

Sabina Australia

"Danny made the drive entertaining & made sure everyone was well looked after throughout the whole experience. We stopped at lots of lovely viewpoints on the way & the views at the Hooker Valley Track were unreal!! Amazing day trip, definitely worth the long day!"

Nicola Australia

"Danny was an amazing tour guide! it was such a chill experience ( no pun intended considering the time of season haha) but for the amount of yime we were on the road it felt like I could have gone longer. Thankyou Danny for making my first time in the snow such a memorable experience!!! Especially highlighting some if the Maori legends and stories in light if Matariki was a really nice personal touch too. I highly recommend for anyone thats coming out that way to pursue this tour if you want something evenly paced and stress free from planning!!!"

Laura May Australia

"Worth the early start as managed to catch the sunrise at lindis pass. Knowledgable guide and beautiful scenery and walks. Plenty of rest and snack breaks both ways."

Rose United Kingdom

"Fantastic trip. Picked up on time. Transportation was good. The constant water and snacks helped a lot. The guide was really good - Stopping at opportune stops and helping us get great shots. The two highlights are the Hunter Valley hike and the climb to the Tasman Glacier lookout. I can’t recommend both enough - they are well worth the effort."
