Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo Day Tour from Christchurch

About This Experience

This small-group day trip leaves Christchurch early and drives about four hours south and inland to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, with pickup from selected central hotels. The operator runs dedicated departures, so the minibus never waits while passengers from other tours are transferred on or off along the way. It is a long day, 13 hours or more door to door. The guide gives commentary on the road, but the walks inside the national park are self-guided.

The first break is a 10-minute coffee stop in the historic town of Geraldine. The route then climbs into the Mackenzie Country for 30 minutes at Lake Tekapo, enough time to walk to the Church of the Good Shepherd and the sheepdog statue on the lakeshore. A 15-minute stop at Lake Pūkaki follows, where the turquoise water stretches north toward Aoraki/Mount Cook, at 3,724 m the highest mountain in New Zealand.

In the national park you get about 2.5 hours of free time for lunch and a walk. The main stop is the Tasman Glacier, where a short climb up the moraine wall looks over Tasman Lake to New Zealand's longest glacier, about 23 km of ice, with icebergs on the lake at some times of year. DOC's Tasman Glacier View Track takes about 30 minutes return and has more than 300 steps, so allow for a steady climb.

On the way home there are short breaks at Lake Tekapo and Geraldine before drop-off in central Christchurch. Bottled water, light snacks and Wi-Fi on board come with the tour. Lunch depends on when you book: the listing says bookings from 1 October carry a higher price that includes a packed lunch, while earlier bookings cost less and leave you to buy a meal at a café in Mount Cook Village. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead.

Great day trip! Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us with low hanging fog for most of the day limiting our views of Mt Cook, although the ice bergs in the River ( after a short hike) were incredibly. Despite that you get an absolute sense of the how spectacular the scenery is. Our guide went out of his way to make the best of the situation with a few extra stops etc. While it sounds like a long day, it definitely doesn’t feel that way and I highly recommend this to anyone
